Community Service and Philanthropy

Since starting two years ago, our chapter has worked hard to have a positive impact on our community through working with Special Olympics and other acts of service.

For example, during the fall of 2015, we volunteered to rake leaves for multiple families in Kalamazoo, which gave us a chance to share our vision with our community and help those in need. Overall it was an awesome experience and brought us closer together as brothers.

Most importantly, we have been very involved in Special Olympics since being established. Every semester a few of us are coaches for their basketball, volleyball and track seasons. We attended all of their games, tournaments and helped assist the other coaches and players with anything they needed. Helping out those who are less fortunate was really why we volunteered for Special Olympics, and why we will continue to be a part it. There was nothing better than getting close with many of the players, hearing their stories, and being a shoulder to lean on. It really made our brothers appreciate what we have in life. On top of being coaches for Special Olympics, we participated in other events to help raise money for them, to ensure the organization will have the funds to continue to run Special Olympics.

Starting in the Fall of 2016, we started a tradition called Sig Tau-cos. Sig Tau-cos is an event where every other Tuesday for two months we made and sold tacos at the center of campus to raise money for Special Olympics. This event was very beneficial for us because not only did we get recognized by our student body, but we also got to explain what Special Olympics is to many students, and got more of the students to get involved with Special Olympics. In addition, we had many brothers participate in the Polar Plunge in Kalamazoo to help raise more money for Special Olympics. After a solid three weeks of fundraising, we raised close to three thousand dollars for them (placing in the top five out of over fifty other groups who were in attendance, and first place out of all of Greek life on campus.)

Another way we raised money for Special Olympics was two fundraisers at Blaze Pizza and Old Chicago Pizza. We organized a deal with both of the restaurants so that we received twenty percent of the funds they took in that day if the customer showed them the flyer we created. In addition, we participated with all of Greek life this past spring for Relay for Life. After weeks of hard work, we helped Greek life raise over seventeen thousand dollars for the American Cancer Society. This was a wonderful time, and it was awesome to get to know more of Greek life and raise money for a great cause.

Also, we had several brothers participate in Bronco Buddies in the Fall of 2016. They helped incoming freshmen move into the dorms, and answered questions the new students had regarding Western Michigan University. We also had one brother who was a student orientation leader, where he put over 70 hours of community service in by touring incoming freshmen around campus for several weeks and helped transition from high school to the University.

Our last campus involvement was with Drive Safe Kalamazoo (DSK.) We drove students who needed transportation to and from campus from 9PM-3AM. We have also participated in other things off campus on our own time as well. This past summer we had brothers make food baskets for the homeless at Gleaner’s Food Bank and Loaves and Fishes. Lastly, we had a few brothers help out at the Women and Leadership Conference. At this conference, the brothers helped make sure the event ran smoothly and made sure the patrons got the best experience possible. Community service is one the most important things our fraternity believes in, and we plan to get more involved as time goes on and our membership begins to exponentially grow.
